In October 2024 I was grateful to spend a week in Kylesku, supported by the John Muir Trust. I spent the best of the weather chasing sunrises on the mountain islands of Assynt, and sleeping high on the hill, all while carrying big rolls of thick watercolour paper and paints. For the worst of the weather I hid in the little cabin I had been given for the week, and worked my hill sketches into studio pieces.
Painting outside is not always straightforward. The cold temperatures interfered with my watery washes of sunrise colours, not allowing them to dry before they slid all over the paper; and the uneven surface of rock and snow would let pigment pool in unwanted places, but without these messy and rugged sketches the paintings are lifeless and dull. It’s always a pleasure to take some extended time in the mountains, and try to bring that time back to the page to share with others.
