The first snows of the winter came in mid October in 2024, while I was spending a week in Assynt on residency at Kylesku. Early winter is always a mix of excitement and anticipation, when the trials of last winter have faded in the memory, and I’m pushing for my first properly snowy day out. Camping high on Ben More Assynt, I got moody views over the southern Assynt hills. I painted from my sleeping bag, and suffered the sort-of-frozen-but-mostly-just-wet snow around my tent. The next morning most of it had already melted away, and I had a soggy walk out to my cozy cabin and a change of socks.
